Newcomp

New computers are awesome.  I get “new” computers all the time.  Most are not working when I get them for free.  I then fix them and give them to family and friends.    However, I’m getting a fairly decent computer this time.  Here are some specs for you fellow nerds:

Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 2.2 Ghz (I plan to overclock this to about 2.8 Ghz)
4 GB 800 Mhz OCZ RAM
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 320 MB
1.75 TB of WD hard drives (I found two VERY inexpensive drives, and I need the space for media and backups and the multiple operating systems I plan on installing)
Wireless N, gigabit LAN
HD Realtek sound (so my surround system will still make our dorm room the place to have an occasional movie night)
and all kinds of other awesomeness.

ALL-inclusive, about $600.  Pair it with my 22″ widescreen LCD monitor and 5.1 surround sound system, and I’ll actually start pumping out some media!  I can’t wait!

What this means for the non-nerds that managed to skip through the gobbly-gook and arrive at this sentence:  better movie/game nights if you come and visit the physical room 2593, more TV shows on “The Southern Network”, more of my music and pictures being posted here, and MANY more videos for your viewing delight.  Which leads me to my next post….

  • Also, in case you are my parents or someone else who feels I must justify a purchase like this with a school- money- job- worthwhilething- related explanation:

It’s great for computer science majors to have decent computers.  My current compy is pathetic and about to die if I put any more pressure on it.  It’s grand for casual web surfers, but not a CS major.  Actually, my graphics card already died on my old compy–and it was the newest part!

So, there you have it.  An inexpensive, yet powerful desktop computer.  I’m satisfied.

  • I got the CPU wrong:  Core 2 Duo E6400, 2.13 Ghz, which I have already overclocked to 2.4 Ghz (I may try more later).

  • Okay, now it seems to be stable at 2.8 Ghz.  I have a “Windows Experience Index” of 5.5.  It’s only 5.5 on the processor because it’s not quad-core, and on the RAM because it’s DDR2 instead of DDR3.  Everything else is at 5.9, the highest.

  • XP, or Vista?

  • I’m going with Vista 64-bit so I can use all 4 GB of RAM (in a 32-bit system I would end up with only about 3.5 GB of usable RAM).  I hate Vista.  It’s been giving me issues already.  I’m reinstalling Vista.  It was too slow to even play 720p video!  Even my old computer could handle that!  I may have installed a bad driver or something.  It was slow after a restart.  Before that, it was blazingly fast.

  • Well, I got it worked out.  It’s now just fine.  I think it was a driver.  Anyway, now it plays 1080p video like it’s nothing.  It can play any game on full graphics.  It can open an application in a couple seconds.  It gets a 5.9 “Vista experience index rating” on everything except RAM and the CPU (5.6 and 5.5, respectively).  5.9 is the highest you can go.
